Goal: 500 traditional proas on the water again in the Marianas by 2030
By building 500 Chamorro and Carolinian proas and matching the number seen on the water in 1565, there can be no doubt that we will have re-established the sailing tradition in the Marianas. Our goal is to have accomplished this by 2030. In the process of reaching this goal, we will have also:
- Strengthened Chamorro and Carolinian cultural identity in the Marianas
- Taught boat-building skills
- Laid the foundation for a local boat-building industry
- Created a fascinating canoe house destination for tourists and visitors
- Shown the world a new and positive perspective of our people and our islands
- Instilled a sense of community pride in our unique and fast proas
- Enabled first-hand experience of aspects of ancient life in our islands
- Involved our young people in positive and healthy activities
- Created a close-knit community of traditional proa builders and sailors
- Fostered respect and appreciation of our islands' marine environment
